General
Orientation
Leadership in educational institutions demand a comprehensive understanding on school leadership. Broad-based pedagogical leadership offers tools for analyzing questions that are related to pedagogical leadership and developing schools as an inclusive practice of the whole school community. Broad based pedagogical leadership comprises technical, human and pedagogical but also symbolic leadership and the meanings of the shared work of the community which can be understood as a cultural leadership of the school. Moreover, this leadership approach focuses not only the leadership of the principal but also teachers and their participation and commitment on leadership and development of educational institutions.
Training consists of pre assignment, lectures, workshops in small groups and 10 week remote session.

After completing this course, you as a participant are able to...
- Comprehend the concept of broad based pedagogical leadership
- Understand how broad based pedagogical leadership works through human resources (well being, motivation) and leadership structures ( leadership structures, distributed leadership)
- Identify with how to lead the school operating culture and management culture (effect of organizational culture, leadership culture)
- Understand what kind of pedagogical leadership is needed to support the implementation of CBC
- Reflect the benefits of pedagogical leadership to Kenyan teacher education and school context and how teacher education and school context should be developed to support CBC and broad based pedagogical leadership
Completing the course:
- Active attendance to the lectures and workshops
- Returned pre assignment and reflective journal
Participants will get a certificate after completing the course.
Workshops :
- Three groups (Early Childhood Education / Primary school /Secondary school)
- You can divide these groups in half if you feel that one group is too big
- All groups choose a leader, who guides the cooperation in the group and saves the workshop tasks to Moodle after the workshop
- Workshop activities are participatory and base on shared reflective dialogue in groups
- The most important task is to reflect the lectures and convert the idea of pedagogical leadership to the local educational context
- Personal laptop and access to Moodle is needed during the workshop

Pre assignment
- This pre assignment prepares to the course pedagogical leadership and builds a conceptual understanding on the topic.

Day 1

· Pedagogical leadership: leading learning and teaching at school context

· Leading teacher competence, setting goals, promoting the quality learning environment
· The significance of attitudes and beliefs

Day 2
- Experiences from Finland: human resource leadership in Finnish context
- Human resource leadership and its principles
- Leading teacher work motivation and commitment
- Well being of teachers and students and their effect on the productivity
- Reward-system, recruiting personnel
The idea is to reflect the topic to your own knowledge and experiences.
How can we create well being, motivation and commitment to our teachers at school?
- Experiences from Finland: leadership structures at Finnish schools

Day 3
- Organizational culture
- Leadership culture
- Symbols
- Artifacts
The goal of this workshop is to reflect the lecture topic: organization and leadership culture to your own experiences and perceptions.
Remote training
To deepen your understanding of the topic, read articles of Lahtero, T. & Kuusilehto-Awale, L. (2015). Possibility to Engage in Pedagogical Leadership as Experienced by Finnish Newly Appointed Principals and
Lahtero, T. & Risku, M. (2012). Symbolic leadership and leadership culture in one unified comprehensive school in Finland. Also, use the material from the pre assignment and three-day training session (lectures and workshops).
· With your reflective knowledge of the course content, plan and arrange two meetings (learning cafe for example, 45 minutes) for group of colleagues or principals.
· You may choose the topics you find most relevant for your participants. However, the topics have to consider pedagogical leadership we have discussed during the lectures and workshops. Also, to encourage the dialogue and reflection to your national context it is recommended to use participatory methods.
· Write a reflective journal of your planned sessions. Times New Roman, 12. Max 3000 words.
· Write down your plans: goals, methods, content with argumentation.
· After the learning cafe, write down a short reflection of each meetings. Observations, ideas. thoughts, possibilities, results, what you find relevant for your paper. Reflect your observations to the articles above.

The goal of supplementary assignment is to reflect the lecture topic: organization and leadership culture to your own experiences and perceptions. You can find slides to this topic in "Day 3" folder.
